A final look at Palmyra. The jihadists are within 2km of the Unesco World Heritage site (BBC, 14 May 2015, 1700 GMT).
By the eternal sky of Baal-Shamin, the Moon Aglibol, and the Sun Malakbel, spare Palmyra!
(ATSB, 13 May 2015) Fugro Equator’s deep tow system detected a cluster of small sonar contacts in the southern part of the search area, 12 nautical miles to the east of the 7th arc. The sonar data was carefully analysed and categorised as Class 2 – “of potential interest but unlikely to be related to MH370.”
Analysis of the images revealed that the debris was indeed man-made, but indicated that it was actually the wreck of a ship. This wreck is previously uncharted and the imagery will be provided to expert marine archaeologists for possible identification.

Another free thinker murdered
The Daily Star (Bangladesh), May 12, 2015
Blogger and an organiser of local Gonojagoron Mancha, Ananta Bijoy Das, was killed in Sylhet this morning in continuation of attack on free thinkers of the society.
The murder comes in persistence of the recent killings of free thinkers Avijit Roy and Oyashiqur Rahman earlier this year – which have been blamed on fanatics.
Ananta Bijoy was killed at Subid Bazar area in Sylhet city around 9:00am this morning, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Kamrul Hasan told The Daily Star.
Four assailants intercepted him, chased him down and stabbed him indiscriminately all over, a Gonojagoron Mancha activist sought anonymity to tell our Moulvibazar correspondent.
“Ananta died on the spot,” he said. “Ananta was an organiser of local progressive publication outlet Jukti (logic) and a relentless writer on science.” Read More »
I want to start with a general question about the relationship between philosophy and physics. There has been a fair amount of sniping between these two disciplines over the past few years. Why the sudden, public antagonism between philosophy and physics?
Lawrence Krauss: That's a good question. I expect it's because physics has encroached on philosophy. Philosophy used to be a field that had content, but then "natural philosophy" became physics, and physics has only continued to make inroads. Every time there's a leap in physics, it encroaches on these areas that philosophers have carefully sequestered away to themselves, and so then you have this natural resentment on the part of philosophers. This sense that somehow physicists, because they can't spell the word "philosophy," aren't justified in talking about these things, or haven't thought deeply about them--- Read More »

Und mit Bartleby lakonisch hauchen: »I would prefer not to …«. Gut, Bartleby verstört nicht nur seine Umgebung, sondern auch sich selbst und ist am Ende tot. Aber konsequenter kann man nicht generalstreiken (und dabei auch noch so höflich bleiben) Read More »
